About Keratosis

Actinic Keratosis
AK’s are caused by too much exposure to the sun’s UV radiation and are associated with old age, thus it is sometimes called solar keratosis or senile keratosis. Squamous cell carcinoma can be developed from lesions brought about by actinic keratosis. Efudex is a form of 5-fluorouracil, an anti cancer drug. The drug is a topical cream also employed for chemotherapy. Application of the cream with fingers is proposed instead of metal applicators. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding must not use Efudex. Precautions in using Efudex also include avoidance of sun exposure, and use of sunscreen with SPF 15 and above.

Seborrheic Keratosis
Seborrheic keratosis resembles actinic keratosis, but in this case, it could be waxy or greasy. It is a noncancerous benign skin growth, so it poses no other potential dangers. This kind of keratosis originates from keratinocytes and also involves the uppermost layers of the epidermis. One can chuckle at the notion that it resembles barnacles. The main reason it occurs is still unidentified.

Seborrheic Keratosis Treatments
