Actinic Keratosis | Early Treatment Is Essential

Squamous cell carcinoma can arise from a premalignant condition such as actinic keratosis. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common form of skin cancer and usually affects areas that get the most exposure to the sun such as the face. Having actinic keratosis can heighten one’s risk of having squamous cell carcinoma, so if you are concerned about your health, that actinic keratosis must go once it is diagnosed.

Keratinocytes affected by UV radiation can mutate and malfunction. The bumpy and scaly characteristic is contributed by the thickening of the epidermis on the affected part. As the name suggest, it has something to do with keratin, the component of our hair and nails. Because of that, actinic keratosis appears to be solid and rough.

Actinic keratosis can progress to squamous cell carcinoma if it is taken for granted. Squamous cells are easily destroyed by UV rays because they are flat and thin. Skin cancer can be prevented if one is cautious about queer changes on the skin.

Many treatments for actinic are now available, and its up to you which type of treatment would suit you best.   Also know if you can afford the treatments, and also how worse your actinic keratosis is.

Actinic Keratosis Removal Treatments

•    Laser surgery can be costly, but it’s worth every dollar when it comes to its effectiveness. Specifically, CO2 and Er-YAG lasers are applied for actinic removal.

•    Electrocautery employs electricity in burning of actinic for removal.

•    The same as electrocautery, but this time, low temperature is used to freeze off cells affected by actinic keratosis. Liquid nitrogen is used for this procedure.

•    Although commonly used for chemotherapy, 5-fluorouracil also helps to remove actinic keratosis. The reproduction of abnormal cells is blocked by this cream.  Healthy skin cells are not greatly affected since the abnormal cells absorb fluorouracil faster. You have to go through a very harsh treatment with the use of this cream but the outcome is superb.

•    Aldara, or in general, imiquimod is an immune response modifier which can help remove actinic keratosis. Great fortitude and tolerance should be taken on your part to get optimum effects.

The abovementioned treatments are just some of the accessible treatments for actinic keratosis. You should consult a dermatologist or doctor before proceeding to a treatment so your overall health would be checked if you can undergo such treatments. By removing your actinic keratosis, you can now breathe easily without worrying about squamous cell carcinoma.
