What To Know About Keratosis

Hyperkeratinization on skin is the main cause of keratosis. Keratin is the main component of human hair and fingernail and toenails. Excessive amounts of this could be bad for the skin. Various types of keratoses have different characteristics and corresponding treatment.

Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratosis also goes by the title solar keratosis and senile keratosis. It is a disease commonly related to aging people and to the sun, that’s why it is called by those names. Actually, it can be a precancer warning and can result to squamous cell carcinoma. Actinic keratosis are wart like bumps which is rough, scaly but non viral. Actinic Keratosis Treatments

Laser treatments, cryotherapy and electrocautery are some of the surgical treatments offered for actinic keratosis. It depends on your case if these treatments fit you. Non surgical treatments entail the application of creams.

Imiquimod can treat actinic keratosis effectively. It is a type of drug which is an immune response modifier. You need a doctor’s prescription to acquire this. The side effects of using this cream are pains and discomforts. Although the treatment process is not very pleasant, you’re sure to get good results.

5-flourouracil is an anti cancer drug, and Efudex is a trade name for it. It is usually an agent for chemotherapy. It is also a topical cream, applied on the skin by the patient. Side effects include inflammation, itchiness, and pain on the area where the cream is applied. In few chances, discoloration of the skin and scars can occur. The good thing is that it only occurs on the course of the treatment. Prior to the use of the drug, you must let your doctor know if you are taking any forms of medicine. Pregnant and lactating women are not advised to take Efudex. While using Efudex, you must avoid sun exposure or use sunscreens.

Seborrheic Keratosis

Seborrheic keratosis resembles actinic keratosis, but in this case, it could be waxy or greasy. It is a noncancerous benign skin growth, so it poses no other potential dangers. This kind of keratosis originates from keratinocytes and also involves the uppermost layers of the epidermis. One can snicker at the notion that it resembles barnacles. Its cause is still uncertain.

Seborrheic Keratosis Treatments

Cryosurgery and electrocautery are some forms of treatments for seborrheic keratosis. Drying the SK up and peeling it off is used for bigger cases. . A scalpel is used in place of a curette in a method called surgical excision.
